India, Canada kick off second round of free trade talks

## Second Round of Negotiations

India and Canada have commenced the second round of discussions for the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in New Delhi. These talks aim to finalize the agreement by the end of the year, as agreed by the leaders of both nations.

## Trade Goals and Diplomatic Relations

The negotiations are part of a broader effort to boost bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030. This initiative follows a meeting in March between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, which marked a significant improvement in diplomatic relations.

## Economic and Sectoral Cooperation

The two countries are also focusing on enhancing cooperation in energy and critical minerals. The leaders believe that a comprehensive trade framework will strengthen economic ties and support their shared trade aspirations.

## Current Trade Figures

In the fiscal year 2024-25, trade between India and Canada amounted to $8.66 billion. India's exports to Canada include pharmaceuticals, machinery, and textiles, while imports from Canada consist of pulses, fertilizers, and mineral fuels.
