UAE boosts position in regenerative medicine, stem cell therapies

## UAE's Growing Role in Regenerative Medicine

The United Arab Emirates is solidifying its status as a key player in regenerative medicine and stem cell therapies, aiming to become a global hub for these advanced treatments. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to create a sustainable healthcare system driven by innovation and clinical excellence.

## Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre

The Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre (ADSCC) is at the forefront of this movement, integrating clinical care, research, and biomanufacturing. The centre is recognized by international bodies such as the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy and the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies. It focuses on using stem cells for complex conditions, including bone marrow transplants and gene therapies.

## Cutting-Edge Research and Treatments

ADSCC is pioneering research in immunological, genetic, and cancer-related diseases, utilizing artificial intelligence for diagnostics. Collaborations with institutions like Khalifa University and New York University Abu Dhabi enhance these efforts. The centre's clinical arm, Yas Clinic Hospital, is expanding cellular and gene therapies, offering treatments like mononuclear immune cell therapy and umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cell therapy.

## Notable Achievements

The hospital has successfully used chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy to treat complex conditions and has introduced the UAE's first gene therapy for haemoglobin disorders in partnership with Vertex Pharmaceuticals. This therapy employs CRISPR-Cas9 technology to edit disease-causing genes.

## Bone Marrow Transplant Milestones

In 2025, ADSCC performed 113 bone marrow transplants, achieving a total of 240 since 2022. The centre also delivered 26 CAR-T therapies, with survival rates reaching 80%. These achievements highlight the UAE's progress in regenerative medicine, particularly in treating paediatric cancers and other complex conditions.
