A suspected hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship has resulted in three fatalities, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The ship was traveling from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Cape Verde when the outbreak occurred.
## Details of the Outbreak
The WHO confirmed one case of hantavirus infection through laboratory testing, with five additional suspected cases. Of the six affected individuals, three have died, and one is currently in intensive care in South Africa. The South African health ministry reported a "severe acute respiratory illness" linked to the outbreak.
## Victims and Response
The first victim, a 70-year-old passenger, died on board, and his body is now on Saint Helena. His 69-year-old wife, who also fell ill, was evacuated to South Africa, where she passed away. A third victim, a 69-year-old Briton, is receiving intensive care in Johannesburg. Discussions are ongoing regarding the isolation of two other sick passengers in Cape Verde.
## Ship and Operator Information
The MV Hondius, operated by Dutch-based Oceanwide Expeditions, is a polar cruise ship capable of accommodating around 170 passengers and 70 crew members.
