## UAE's Diplomatic Initiative
The United Arab Emirates spearheaded a significant resolution at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) council session in Geneva, which took place from April 28 to May 8, 2026. This resolution marks the first formal condemnation by the ITU of attacks on telecommunications infrastructure, including vital submarine cables in the Gulf region.
## Regional and International Support
Introduced on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states and Jordan, the resolution received unanimous support from member states. It highlights the UAE's growing influence in international diplomacy. A separate proposal by Iran did not gain consensus.
## Focus on Submarine Cables
The resolution specifically condemns attacks on telecom infrastructure in Bahrain, Kuwait, the UAE, and Jordan, with a particular emphasis on the damage to submarine cables. These cables are crucial for global connectivity, linking Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Africa.
## Call for International Action
The resolution urges the ITU to monitor such incidents and report their global implications. It also calls for coordinated international support to assist affected countries. This initiative aligns with recent United Nations resolutions emphasizing the protection of civilian infrastructure.
## Statements from UAE Officials
Jamal Al Musharakh, the UAE’s representative to the UN in Geneva, emphasized that attacks on communication systems threaten essential services and have far-reaching impacts on digital networks. Majed Al Mesmar, Director-General of the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority, stressed the importance of protecting telecom infrastructure as it is vital for global connectivity.
