Fujairah joins UAE digital fisheries system to strengthen traceability

## Fujairah's New Initiative

Fujairah has joined the UAE's digital fisheries platform, aiming to enhance the traceability and transparency of seafood. This move is part of a broader national strategy to monitor fishing activities and verify the origins of seafood products.

## Key Agreement

The initiative was formalized through an agreement between Sheikh Fahim Al Qasimi, co-founder of Seafood Souq, and Mahmood Hassan Al Ali, Chairman of the Fujairah Fishermen Coop. The signing was witnessed by officials from the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and the UAE federation of fisherman associations.

## How the System Works

The digital platform, developed by Seafood Souq, uses mobile tools and digital logbooks to provide real-time monitoring. Each fishing vessel is assigned a QR code that links to verified data, including catch type, origin, and quantity, ensuring full traceability from sea to sale.

## Early Success and Future Prospects

The system was initially launched in Sharjah, where it successfully tracked over 140,000 kilograms of seafood across more than 130 vessels. This success has paved the way for its implementation in Fujairah, where digital records and catch certificates will support sustainable sourcing practices.

## Market Impact

With the UAE seafood market valued at approximately $1.49 billion, the demand for transparency is growing. Digital traceability is becoming essential for maintaining quality, building trust, and enhancing competitiveness in global markets.
