## Musk's Court Appearance
Elon Musk appeared in federal court in Oakland, California, facing intense questioning over his involvement with OpenAI. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015, claimed he was misled as the organization shifted from its nonprofit origins to a highly profitable entity.
## Dispute Over OpenAI's Direction
Musk argued that OpenAI, initially intended to prioritize societal benefits, transformed into a for-profit powerhouse valued at $852 billion. He accused CEO Sam Altman of betraying the nonprofit mission, which Musk believed was crucial for ethical AI development.
## Legal Proceedings
During cross-examination, OpenAI's attorneys challenged Musk's narrative, presenting emails suggesting he had previously considered alternative business models. Musk maintained that his financial contributions were meant to support a nonprofit endeavor.
## Potential Outcomes
Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers is expected to rule by late May on whether OpenAI violated its original commitments. Musk is seeking to revert OpenAI to a nonprofit and remove Altman and President Greg Brockman from their positions. He also demands $134 billion in damages, which he intends to reinvest in the nonprofit.
