## France's Comprehensive Energy Transition Plan
France has announced a groundbreaking plan to eliminate all fossil fuels by 2050. This initiative, revealed at an international conference in Santa Marta, Colombia, outlines specific deadlines for phasing out coal by 2030, oil by 2045, and gas by 2050.
## A Unified Approach
The plan consolidates existing climate and energy policies under a single framework, providing clear deadlines for the transition. France's envoy, Benoit Faraco, emphasized the country's unique position in setting such explicit goals, highlighting its commitment to reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
## Steps Towards Carbon Neutrality
France aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, with interim targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 5% annually from 2024 to 2028. The roadmap also includes plans to electrify sectors like heating and transport and support international efforts to transition away from fossil fuels.
## Global Context
The announcement comes amid rising fuel prices and global energy supply challenges. The Santa Marta conference, co-hosted by Colombia and the Netherlands, gathers nearly 60 nations to discuss voluntary roadmaps for reducing fossil fuel dependence. While no binding commitments are expected, the conference aims to inspire countries to develop their own strategies.
