Europe faces jet fuel shortage as Middle East supplies halt

## Jet Fuel Supply Disruption

Europe is grappling with a significant jet fuel shortage due to a halt in shipments from the Middle East. This disruption is attributed to ongoing regional conflicts and the closure of crucial shipping routes.

## Impact on Aviation

The timing of this supply interruption is particularly concerning as it coincides with the peak summer travel season. European countries, part of the OECD, consume around 1.6 million barrels of jet fuel and kerosene daily. However, local refineries only produce about 1.1 million barrels, creating a shortfall of 500,000 barrels that typically relies on imports.

## Dependency on Middle Eastern Imports

Historically, Europe has depended heavily on the Middle East for jet fuel, with the region supplying approximately 60% of Europe's external imports last year. This reliance makes Europe vulnerable to disruptions in Middle Eastern supply chains.

## Rising Prices and Potential Shortages

Jet fuel prices have surged past $200 per barrel as inventories remain tight. Although airlines and suppliers have minimized immediate concerns, the International Energy Agency has warned of potential shortages by June if Europe cannot secure alternative supplies to replace the lost Middle Eastern imports.
