Dubai’s Indian community lost another doyen: Vasu Shroff’s story

## Early Journey to Dubai

Vasu Shroff, a prominent figure in Dubai's Indian community, began his journey in 1952 when he arrived from Bombay (now Mumbai) on a ship. With just $1.50 for his ticket, he stepped into a city that was then a modest trading outpost. Life was challenging, with scarce resources and basic living conditions.

## Building a Business Empire

Shortly after his arrival, Shroff joined his family's textile business in Meena Bazaar. By October 1952, he founded Regal Traders, which later evolved into the Regal Group, a multi-billion-dirham enterprise. His success grew significantly after the UAE's federation, transforming his business into a diverse empire.

## Contributions to the Indian Community

Beyond business, Shroff was instrumental in shaping the Indian community in Dubai. In 1961, he helped establish The Indian High School, serving as its first Hindi and Physical Education teacher. His efforts extended to founding community institutions like the India Club and supporting various charitable initiatives.

## A Guiding Force

Shroff was seen as a guiding force and a pillar of strength within the community. His contributions were not limited to business; he was deeply involved in philanthropy, supporting schools, hospitals, and cultural preservation projects.

## Legacy and Recognition

Honored with India's Pravasi Bharatiya Samman and the UAE's Golden Visa, Shroff's life symbolized the strong ties between India and the UAE. Despite his achievements, he remained grounded, emphasizing values and community service. His passing marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and community building.
