UAE launches national initiative for climate-smart crops to boost food security

## New Agricultural Strategy

The program targets four strategic crops, including millet and sorghum, which are well-suited to the UAE's arid climate. These crops require significantly less water than traditional grains and can thrive in high temperatures, making them ideal for the region. They also offer nutritional benefits, being rich in fiber and minerals.

## Innovative Agricultural Practices

In addition to crop cultivation, the initiative promotes the use of "Blue Panicum Grass" for livestock fodder. This grass is highly tolerant to salinity and drought, allowing it to grow in challenging conditions with minimal freshwater use.

## Strategic Goals

The initiative aligns with the UAE's National Food Security Strategy 2051, aiming to diversify the food supply, reduce import dependency, and enhance local production. It represents a shift towards a knowledge-based agricultural system that balances growth with environmental conservation.

Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, emphasized the importance of this initiative in building a sustainable food system. The program seeks to empower farmers with innovative practices that maximize economic returns while minimizing environmental impact.

Dr. Tarifa Al Zaabi, Director General of ICBA, highlighted the initiative as a model of collaboration between government and research institutions. It leverages over 25 years of research to bring climate-smart solutions from the lab to the field, supporting a more sustainable food system in the UAE.
