## A Pioneering Force in Photojournalism
Raghu Rai, a towering figure in Indian photojournalism, has passed away at the age of 83. His death was announced on his Instagram account, accompanied by a striking black-and-white portrait that encapsulated his artistic vision.
## A Legacy of Capturing India
Born on December 18, 1942, in Jhang, Rai's career took off under the mentorship of Henri Cartier-Bresson, leading to his induction into Magnum Photos in 1977. His work is a vivid documentation of India's social, political, and cultural landscapes, capturing both significant events and everyday life.
## Iconic Works
Rai's lens immortalized moments such as the Bhopal Gas Tragedy and intimate portraits of figures like Mother Teresa and Indira Gandhi. His images of Indian streets and the Ganges River are celebrated for their depth and storytelling.
## Tributes and Cremation
Rai's passing has prompted tributes from across the artistic community. Photographer Atul Kasbekar hailed him as the greatest Indian photographer, while others highlighted his lasting impact on the field. Rai's cremation is scheduled for April 26, 2026, at the Lodhi Road Cremation Ground.
Rai is survived by his wife, Gurmeet, and their children Nitin, Lagan, Avani, and Purvai. His work continues to inspire and influence future generations of photographers.
