## New Pathway for OFWs
Filipino workers overseas now have an opportunity to convert their professional experience into college degrees. This initiative, launched by the Philippine Commission on Higher Education (CHED), aims to provide easier access to higher education for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) without requiring them to leave their jobs.
## ETEEAP Explained
The program operates under the Expanded Tertiary Education Equivalency and Accreditation Programme (ETEEAP). It allows professionals to earn academic credits based on their work experience. Instead of traditional schooling, applicants undergo an assessment of their skills and industry experience. Eligible candidates then complete only the remaining academic requirements for a degree.
## Online Registration and Support
A new online platform facilitates registration and pre-assessment, reducing processing time and enabling OFWs to start their academic journey while working abroad. CHED plans to establish enlistment kiosks in universities across the Philippines to provide guidance and in-person assistance.
## Eligibility and Demand
The program targets OFWs with at least five years of professional experience, especially those affected by global uncertainties. CHED chairperson Shirley Agrupis emphasized the program's role in recognizing the skills and knowledge of workers who lack formal degrees. Over 5,000 OFWs have shown interest, particularly in fields like hospitality, health sciences, and education.
## Institutional Support
Currently, 112 higher education institutions in the Philippines are authorized to offer ETEEAP. As of February, 1,409 OFWs are enrolled, and 333 have graduated. Many participants have reported career advancements after earning their degrees. The program was institutionalized by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in 2025, reflecting the government's commitment to supporting OFWs' career prospects.
