## Ice Obstruction on Everest

A significant ice chunk is obstructing the route to Mount Everest's summit, potentially delaying the 2024 climbing season. The icefall doctors, a team of expert mountaineers, have been working to set up ropes and ladders on the mountain. However, their progress has been stalled for nearly two weeks due to a large serac above the Khumbu icefall.

## Efforts to Resolve the Issue

Dawa Jangbu Sherpa, an icefall doctor, mentioned that they are waiting for the ice to melt, which they expect will happen in a few days. Meanwhile, a team of experts is monitoring the situation and considering alternative plans to ensure the climbing season proceeds without significant delays. Helicopters may be used to drop supplies if necessary.

## Climbing Season and Preparations

Nepal, home to eight of the world's ten highest peaks, attracts hundreds of climbers each spring. The government has issued over 900 climbing permits this season, including 410 for Everest. Currently, more than 1,000 people, including climbers and support staff, are at the base camp preparing for their ascent.

## Historical Context

The Khumbu icefall is known for its dangers, with previous incidents causing fatalities. In 2023, three Nepali guides died when a block of ice fell, and in 2014, 16 guides were killed in a similar accident. Despite these risks, Everest remains a popular destination for climbers worldwide.
