## ICC Confirms Charges
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has confirmed charges of crimes against humanity against former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. The charges relate to his alleged involvement in a series of deadly anti-drug operations during his tenure as president and earlier as mayor of Davao City.
## Allegations and Arrest
Duterte, who led the Philippines from 2016 to 2022, was arrested last year and taken to The Hague. The ICC judges found substantial grounds to believe he was responsible for numerous killings carried out by police and hit squads, motivated by financial incentives or fear of becoming targets themselves.
## Reaction and Defense
Duterte denies the accusations, and his defense lawyer criticized the decision, claiming it relies on unverified statements from self-confessed murderers. Despite this, the ICC's decision is seen as a significant step towards accountability.
## Impact on Victims' Families
Families of victims of the anti-drug campaign have welcomed the ICC's decision, hoping it will bring justice and closure. Human rights groups also praised the move, emphasizing its importance in holding leaders accountable for grave crimes.
## Trial Proceedings
A trial date has not yet been set, and Duterte has waived his right to appear in court. Judges previously confirmed he is fit to stand trial despite health concerns. The ICC continues to assert its jurisdiction over the case, despite the Philippines' withdrawal from the court during Duterte's presidency.
