## Arrests and Charges

Federal authorities have apprehended over two dozen individuals linked to the Mexican Mafia in a significant operation across Southern California. The arrests took place early Thursday morning, primarily in Orange County, as part of a coordinated effort involving the FBI and other agencies.

A total of 43 individuals, including those already detained, face charges such as murder, kidnapping, extortion, and drug trafficking. Authorities confiscated 120 pounds of methamphetamine, over eight pounds of fentanyl, 25 firearms, and more than $30,000 in cash.

## Criminal Activities

The Mexican Mafia, originating in the 1950s, has evolved into a powerful criminal network controlling drug smuggling and extortion from within California's prison system. The indictment reveals that a leader, operating from prison, directed gang activities using contraband cellphones. This included orchestrating kidnappings and assaults, as well as managing drug sales and illegal gambling operations.

## Legal Proceedings

The defendants are scheduled to appear in federal court in Los Angeles and Orange counties. The investigation highlights the gang's involvement in a murder at a gang-controlled motel in Anaheim, among other crimes.
