## Incident Overview
A chemical leak at the Catalyst Refiners plant in Institute, West Virginia, led to the deaths of two individuals and sent approximately 30 others to hospitals. The incident occurred as workers were preparing to shut down part of the facility.
## Cause of the Leak
The leak was triggered by a chemical reaction involving nitric acid and another substance, resulting in the release of toxic hydrogen sulfide gas. This reaction happened during a cleaning process at the plant.
## Emergency Response
Seven emergency responders were among the injured, highlighting the risks faced by first responders. A shelter-in-place order was issued for the surrounding area and lifted after more than five hours.
## Hospitalizations and Symptoms
Patients were treated for respiratory symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, sore throat, and itchy eyes. Several hospitals in the area, including Vandalia Health Charleston Area Medical Center and WVU Medicine Thomas Memorial Hospital, received patients.
## Company and Community Reaction
Ames Goldsmith Corp., the owner of Catalyst Refiners, expressed condolences and pledged cooperation with investigations. The incident is under investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The plant is situated in West Virginia's "chemical valley," a region historically known for its chemical production facilities.
