## Overview of Hafeet Rail
Hafeet Rail is a significant rail project linking the UAE and Oman, marking the first train connection between the two countries. Named after Jebel Hafeet, a mountain on the UAE-Oman border, the project aims to enhance travel and logistics in the region.
## Project Partners and Goals
The rail initiative is a collaboration between Etihad Rail, Oman Rail, and Mubadala Investment Company. It seeks to integrate the transport networks of the UAE and Oman by connecting Al Ain with Sohar Port. This $2.5 billion project is set to create a unified transport and logistics network, providing economic and social benefits.
## Construction Progress
Construction began in 2024, and as of April 2026, 40% of the rail connection is complete. The network will cover 238 kilometers, with construction ongoing in Al Ain, Al Buraimi, Sohar, and the Wadi Al Jizzi valley.
## Economic and Commercial Impact
Hafeet Rail aims to link industrial and commercial sectors in both countries, reducing freight costs and improving supply chain efficiency. It will connect over 12 passenger stations, 5 major ports, and more than 15 freight facilities, enhancing logistics across the Gulf region.
## Benefits for Travelers
Once operational, the rail service will offer a faster and more comfortable travel option between the UAE and Oman. Passenger trains will reach speeds of up to 200 km/h, significantly reducing travel times and eliminating border crossing delays. The scenic route through desert and mountain landscapes will also boost tourism.
## Journey Times and Route
The rail line will run from Sohar Port to Abu Dhabi via Al Ain, covering a total of 303 kilometers. Travel times will be significantly reduced, with the journey from Abu Dhabi to Sohar taking 1 hour and 40 minutes, down from 3 hours and 25 minutes.
