As Ramadan aligns with the cooler months in the UAE, medical experts emphasize the need for maintaining a strong immune system. The winter season often sees a rise in flu and cold cases, which can be exacerbated by the changes in routine that fasting brings.
## Nutritional Advice
Dr. Sherin Hussain from Medeor Hospital advises that a balanced diet during iftar and suhoor is crucial. Key nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, protein, and omega-3 fatty acids are essential for supporting immunity. Foods rich in vitamin C include citrus fruits and berries, while vitamin D can be sourced from sunlight and fortified foods. Zinc is abundant in legumes and nuts, and probiotics found in yogurt can enhance gut health.
## Hydration and Routine
Proper hydration is vital, especially when fasting for extended periods. Dr. Hussain recommends consuming 8 to 10 cups of water between iftar and suhoor, and incorporating hydrating foods like soups and fruits. Limiting caffeine and sugary drinks is also advised.
Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule is important for immune function. Dr. Hussain suggests aiming for seven to nine hours of sleep daily, even if it means taking short naps.
## Additional Measures
Simple preventive actions such as good hand hygiene and avoiding contact with sick individuals can help reduce infection risks. Supplements like vitamin D, vitamin C, and zinc can be taken outside fasting hours, and the flu vaccine is recommended and does not break the fast.
Regular moderate exercise and stress management are also beneficial for boosting immunity during Ramadan.
