Europe’s EV sales jump 51% as Iran war sends fuel prices soaring

## Surge in Electric Vehicle Registrations

Electric vehicle (EV) sales in Europe experienced a significant increase, with a 51% rise in battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations in March. This surge is attributed to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, which has driven gasoline prices to new highs, influencing consumer preferences.

## Key Market Data

Research from New Automotive and E-Mobility Europe revealed that over 224,000 new electric passenger cars were registered in March across 15 major European markets. These sales represented 22% of all new passenger car registrations in these regions. In the first quarter of 2026, EU member states registered over 500,000 new electric cars, marking a 33.5% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

## Growth in Major Markets

Europe's largest car markets, including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and Poland, all reported BEV growth exceeding 40% year-to-date. Germany, the continent's biggest car market, saw a notable rebound in EV sales, with one in four cars registered in March being fully electric, reflecting a 42% year-to-date increase. Italy's BEV registrations rose by 65%, boosting its EV market share to 8.6% in March.

## Shifting Consumer Priorities

Analysts suggest that the shift towards electric vehicles is driven more by energy security concerns than environmental motivations. The rapid adoption of EVs across Europe indicates a new phase in the transition, with consumers prioritizing protection against fluctuating fuel prices and reducing reliance on imported oil amidst geopolitical tensions.
