## New Traffic Law in UAE

The UAE has introduced a new traffic law aimed at reducing pedestrian fatalities by enforcing stricter penalties for jaywalking. The law, effective since March 2025, targets individuals crossing roads from non-designated areas.

## Increased Fines and Penalties

Under the updated regulations, pedestrians caught jaywalking face a fine of Dh400. However, if jaywalking results in a traffic accident, fines can escalate to between Dh5,000 and Dh10,000, with the possibility of imprisonment. In areas with speed limits of 80 km/h or more, violators may be subject to a minimum three-month jail term and a fine of at least Dh10,000.

## Safety Measures and Recommendations

Authorities emphasize the importance of using designated crossings and following traffic signals. Pedestrians are advised to avoid distractions, such as using phones or wearing headphones, and to remain vigilant while crossing. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) recommends using footbridges and subways for safe road crossing.
