UAE Traffic Law: Driving offences that can lead to licence suspension or cancellation

## Overview of UAE Traffic Law

The UAE's updated traffic regulations, effective since March 2025, outline strict measures for driving offences. These rules are part of Federal Decree-Law No. (14) of 2024, which aims to enhance road safety by defining conditions for obtaining and maintaining a driving licence.

## Conditions for Obtaining a Licence

To qualify for a driving licence in the UAE, applicants must be at least 17 years old, pass a medical examination, and successfully complete a driving test. The Executive Regulations specify the types of licences available, their validity, and the age requirements for each.

## Licence Suspension and Cancellation

Article 12 of the traffic law allows authorities to suspend or cancel a driving licence if the holder is deemed unfit to drive. This can occur if the driver fails to meet medical standards or poses a risk to traffic safety. The Executive Regulations detail the procedures for suspension and the criteria for reinstating licences.

## Serious Driving Offences

Under Article 31, serious offences such as drunk driving, reckless driving, and causing injury or death can lead to arrest and jail time. Drivers may also face penalties for causing significant property damage or failing to cooperate with traffic police.

## Driving Without a Valid Licence

Driving without a valid licence or with an unrecognised foreign licence can result in severe penalties. First-time offenders may face fines between Dh2,000 and Dh10,000, while repeat offenders risk imprisonment and higher fines. Driving without a licence or with the wrong category can lead to up to three months in jail and fines up to Dh50,000 for first offences, with harsher penalties for repeat violations.
