## New Draft Law Targets E-Scooter Safety
Dubai is introducing a draft law that will hold parents legally accountable for their children's unsafe use of electric scooters. This initiative aims to address the growing safety concerns associated with e-scooters, which have been increasingly modified to reach dangerous speeds.
## Parental Accountability
Under the proposed legislation, parents could face legal consequences if their children misuse e-scooters, particularly when modifications or excessive speeds lead to accidents or risks to public safety. Officials equate allowing children to use high-speed scooters to giving them dangerous tools.
## Registration and Monitoring
The draft law also suggests mandatory registration and number plates for e-scooters to enhance monitoring and prevent misuse in criminal activities. This proposal has gained support from various strategic partners, especially in densely populated areas where misuse is more prevalent.
## Rising Violations
Dubai Police have reported over 14,000 violations involving electric bikes and scooters, highlighting the widespread nature of unsafe practices. In a recent campaign, nearly 1,750 scooters and electric bikes were confiscated, emphasizing the need for stricter regulations.
## Safety Concerns
Authorities are particularly concerned about the modification of scooters, which can transform them into unlicensed high-speed vehicles. There is also a lack of parental oversight, with some parents purchasing scooters unsuitable for their children's age or intended use.
## Existing Safety Regulations
Current regulations require riders to have an RTA permit, use designated tracks, and adhere to safety gear requirements. Violations can result in fines starting from Dh200 for lane violations to Dh300 for dangerous riding.
