UAE bans junk food, sugary drinks in schools under new health guide

## New Health Guidelines for Schools

The UAE has introduced the National Guide for Food and Beverages in the School Environment, aimed at promoting healthier eating habits among students. This initiative seeks to ensure that school canteens provide nutritious options that support both physical and cognitive development.

## Framework for School Canteens

The guide sets clear standards for food and beverage management in schools, covering sourcing, production, and storage to maintain nutritional value and safety. It applies to all educational institutions, including public, private, and vocational schools, as well as centers for People of Determination.

## Responsibilities of Authorities and Schools

Local authorities are tasked with monitoring compliance, designating inspection entities, and enforcing penalties for violations. Schools must adhere to 13 responsibilities, including ensuring food safety and hygiene, and providing training for canteen staff.

## Role of Food Suppliers

Food suppliers must obtain valid permits and comply with nutritional standards. They are required to conduct nutritional assessments and update data when changes occur. Suppliers must also coordinate with schools to address dietary needs.

## Prohibited Items

The guide bans several items from school environments, including sugary drinks, candies, chocolate, fried foods, and processed meats. This measure is part of a broader effort to enhance student health and well-being.
