## Voting Extension Announced
Peru's presidential election results have been postponed after logistical issues led to a voting extension. On Sunday, April 12, 2026, many voters in Peru and abroad faced difficulties casting their ballots. Consequently, electoral authorities extended voting for 63,300 residents in Lima, as well as Peruvians in Orlando, Florida, and Paterson, New Jersey, allowing them to vote on Monday.
## Mandatory Voting and Penalties
In Peru, voting is compulsory for citizens aged 18 to 70, with fines of up to $32 for non-compliance. This election features 35 candidates, including a former minister, a comedian, and a political heiress, all competing to become the country's ninth president in a decade.
## Crime and Corruption Concerns
The election occurs amid rising crime and corruption, leading to voter dissatisfaction. Candidates have proposed various measures to address these issues, such as building megaprisons and reinstating the death penalty for severe crimes.
## Voter Turnout and Runoff Likelihood
Over 27 million Peruvians are registered to vote, with approximately 1.2 million voting abroad, primarily in the U.S. and Argentina. A candidate must secure over 50% of the vote to win outright, but a runoff in June is likely due to the fragmented electorate.
## Legislative Reforms
Voters are also selecting members for a bicameral Congress, marking the first time in over 30 years following recent legislative changes that enhance the power of the new upper chamber.
