## Successful Splashdown
NASA's Artemis II mission concluded with a successful splashdown in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego on April 10, 2026. The spacecraft, carrying four astronauts, marked the first crewed lunar flyby in over half a century.
## Crew and Mission Details
The mission was led by Commander Reid Wiseman, with Christina Koch, Victor Glover, and Jeremy Hansen as crew members. They returned in good health after a journey that tested the Orion capsule's capabilities, particularly its heat shield.
## Historic Achievements
This mission set several records, including the farthest distance traveled from Earth by humans, reaching 252,756 miles. It also marked significant milestones with Glover as the first person of color, Koch as the first woman, and Hansen as the first non-American to orbit the Moon.
## Technical Success
The re-entry was a critical test for the Orion capsule, especially after previous concerns with the heat shield during an uncrewed mission in 2022. Adjustments to the re-entry path proved successful, ensuring the astronauts' safe return.
## Future Plans
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman emphasized the mission's success as a step towards establishing a sustained lunar presence, with plans to land on the Moon by 2028 and eventually build a base.
