## New Digital Border System
The European Union has fully implemented a digital Entry/Exit System across the Schengen Area, enhancing border security for non-EU travelers. This system, operational since April 2026, replaces traditional passport stamps with digital records, logging entries and exits of visitors to 29 countries.
## Security and Efficiency
EU officials emphasize the system's role in improving security by identifying potential risks and monitoring overstays. It uses advanced technology to track movements, aiming to prevent irregular migration and document fraud. Since its initial rollout in October 2025, over 52 million crossings have been recorded, with more than 27,000 entry denials.
## How It Works
The system collects biometric data, such as facial images and fingerprints, from non-EU nationals on their first entry. This information is stored in a centralized database, allowing for quicker verification on subsequent visits. Some countries may also use e-gates and self-service kiosks to expedite the process.
## Impact on Travelers
While the system aims to streamline border checks, travelers may experience longer wait times during peak periods, especially at major airports. The new procedures apply to all non-EU visitors, including tourists and business travelers, but exclude EU citizens and long-term visa holders.
## Implementation Timeline
The digital system was gradually introduced starting in October 2025, with full deployment completed by April 2026. This marks a significant shift towards modernizing border management across the Schengen Area.
