## Breakthrough in Colon Cancer Treatment
Doctors at Medcare Royal Hospital in Dubai have successfully removed a large colon tumor without the need for open surgery. The patient, identified as J.N., was initially advised to undergo a major operation that would have resulted in the permanent removal of part of his bowel. However, an innovative endoscopic procedure allowed him to retain his colon intact.
## Minimally Invasive Technique
The tumor, which affected over 75% of J.N.'s intestine, was removed using the Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) technique. This method involves removing the tumor from within the colon without external incisions. Dr. Mohamed Abdelhafez, the consultant gastroenterologist leading the procedure, highlighted the tumor's size and the associated risks, such as perforation and bleeding, which were carefully managed during the operation.
## Successful Outcome and Recovery
The procedure was performed under general anesthesia, and the tumor was removed in one piece. Post-surgery, the internal wound was closed using endoscopic hand-suturing, significantly reducing recovery time. J.N. was discharged just two days after the procedure, a stark contrast to the weeks of recovery typically required after open surgery.
## Implications for Future Treatments
Dr. Abdelhafez emphasized the potential of therapeutic endoscopy to transform treatment options for patients with large, early-stage tumors. The success of this case suggests that many patients might avoid major surgery if evaluated by advanced endoscopists. J.N.'s tumor was confirmed to be non-invasive, and his long-term prognosis is excellent, with only routine follow-ups required.
