## Nationwide Market Shutdown
Pakistan has mandated the closure of markets and shopping centers by 8pm across most regions, excluding Sindh, in response to escalating fuel costs. This decision, driven by the Middle East conflict's impact on oil prices, was made during a meeting led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
## Regional Variations and Exemptions
While the new rules apply to Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, some areas like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa allow markets in divisional headquarters to remain open until 9pm. Restaurants, bakeries, and wedding halls must close by 10pm. Medical stores and pharmacies are exempt from these restrictions.
## Economic Measures
The government has introduced additional austerity measures, including a four-day workweek for government offices, reduced fuel allowances, and a 20% cut in public sector spending. These steps aim to alleviate economic strain amid high energy costs.
## Free Transport Initiative
To further support citizens, free intercity public transport will be available for one month in Gilgit and Muzaffarabad. This initiative is part of broader efforts to manage the economic impact of the global energy crisis.
