How Middle East conflict is costing '$1 billion a day'

## Escalating Costs and Humanitarian Crisis

The United Nations has raised alarms over the escalating conflict in the Middle East, which is now costing approximately $1 billion each day. This financial burden comes as humanitarian organizations face a significant funding shortfall, struggling to aid millions of vulnerable individuals globally.

## Funding Challenges

In December, the UN launched a $23 billion appeal aimed at supporting 87 million of the world's most vulnerable people. However, the initiative remains underfunded by about $14 billion. UN relief chief Tom Fletcher emphasized the need for immediate financial support, stating that even $1 billion could save millions of lives.

## Areas of Urgent Need

Gaza and Sudan are currently identified as regions in dire need of humanitarian assistance. The situation is further complicated by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical energy route, which could disrupt global markets and affect food, energy, and fertilizer prices.

## Call for International Support

Fletcher has urged the international community to prioritize the protection of civilians and infrastructure. He highlighted the importance of governmental support for the UN's plan to save lives, noting that in just one month, 7 million people have received lifesaving aid. However, much more is needed.

## Protecting Humanitarian Workers

The UN has also called for increased protection for humanitarian workers, following recent fatalities in Sudan, Lebanon, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Fletcher stressed the need for a global movement to support these efforts, highlighting that 90% of those killed in drone attacks last year were civilians, including many aid workers.
