## Overhaul of Punjab Police
Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the Chief Minister of Punjab, has announced significant reforms for the Punjab Police, aiming to shift from a fear-based approach to one focused on respect and accountability. This initiative comes in response to longstanding criticisms of the force's intimidating practices and corruption.
## Key Reform Measures
The reforms, part of the 'Fast, Fearless, Transparent Justice' program, include several new measures. Officers will undergo training to improve public interactions, emphasizing respectful communication. Body cameras will be introduced to ensure transparency, and misconduct complaints will be addressed promptly.
Monthly performance evaluations will monitor officers' adherence to professional standards. Additionally, "panic buttons" will be installed outside police stations for immediate reporting of misconduct.
## Community Engagement and Training
The reforms also focus on community policing, drawing inspiration from successful international models like Japan's. Programs will be implemented to strengthen local engagement, especially during cultural events like Basant.
Police personnel will participate in structured programs to unlearn harmful practices and adopt a service-oriented mindset. This includes counseling and training to foster ethical conduct.
## Urgent Need for Change
Maryam Nawaz emphasized the urgency of these reforms, highlighting the need for the 700,000-strong police force to improve public safety and citizen engagement. She stressed that the police should protect the public, not intimidate them.
The reforms aim to transform the Punjab Police into a modern, transparent, and community-oriented institution, restoring public trust and ensuring a just and safe society.
