Dubai's Hessa Street upgrade: When will motorists see traffic relief?

## Significant Reduction in Travel Time

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is advancing with the second phase of the Hessa Street upgrade, a major project aimed at reducing congestion on one of the city's busiest roads. Once completed, the project is expected to cut peak-hour travel times from 24 minutes to just five minutes, a 79% reduction.

## Project Progress and Features

The second phase, which began in December 2025, is currently 10.33% complete as of October 2026. The project will double the road's capacity, adding new bridges and an underpass to improve access to over 10 residential and commercial areas between Al Khail Road and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road.

## Staged Opening Strategy

RTA plans to open sections of the upgraded road in stages, allowing motorists to benefit from completed parts while construction continues. This approach aims to gradually ease congestion along the corridor.

## Infrastructure Enhancements

The upgrade includes improvements to five major intersections, widening the road to four lanes in each direction, and constructing 8,835 meters of bridges. A 408-meter underpass and a 9.1-kilometer cycling track are also part of the development, enhancing connectivity and promoting alternative transport options.

## Expected Benefits

The enhancements are designed to improve traffic flow and access to key areas, benefiting communities, schools, healthcare facilities, and commercial destinations along the route. However, RTA has not specified a completion date or when the first upgraded section will open.
