## UAE's Solar Ambitions
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is on track to become the leading nation in solar power generation per capita by 2031, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The IEA's Renewables 2026 report forecasts that the UAE will produce over 4,000 kilowatt-hours of solar electricity per person by that year, surpassing other countries in solar energy output per individual.
## Regional and Global Rankings
In addition to the UAE, Oman and Qatar are also expected to be among the top 10 countries for solar power per capita, ranking third and fifth, respectively. Australia is projected to take the second spot, with Bulgaria, Greece, Austria, Spain, China, and Chile completing the top 10 list. All these nations are anticipated to generate at least 2,000 kilowatt-hours per person, significantly higher than the global average of 800 kilowatt-hours.
## Growth in Renewable Energy
The IEA report highlights that solar power will be the primary driver of growth in renewable electricity capacity worldwide, with an expected increase of nearly 85% by 2031. The UAE's leadership in renewable energy is part of its broader strategy to diversify its economy and enhance energy security.
## UAE's Clean Energy Goals
During a recent energy summit, UAE's Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, announced an ambitious target to increase the country's clean energy share to 35% by 2030-2031. This goal includes both renewable and nuclear energy sources and will require new projects and increased private sector involvement.
## Middle East's Expanding Role
The Middle East is poised to play a significant role in the global expansion of renewable energy, driven by supportive policies and market development. The IEA anticipates that the region will contribute substantially to the growth of renewable energy capacity in the coming years.
