## What is Muhurat Trading?
Muhurat Trading is a special one-hour session on Indian stock exchanges, held during Diwali, marking the start of the Hindu financial year. This year, the session will occur on November 8, with the NSE and BSE opening for trading from 12:50 PM to 2:10 PM UAE time. The tradition involves worshipping Goddess Lakshmi and making symbolic trades.
## How UAE Residents Can Participate
Indian residents in the UAE with NRI status can directly invest in this session. To do so, they need to open an NRE or NRO bank account and obtain Portfolio Investment Scheme (PIS) approval from a designated bank. Following this, a demat and trading account with a SEBI-registered broker is necessary. These accounts must be active before the session begins. NRIs are permitted to trade equities on a delivery basis only, as intraday trading and short selling are not allowed. The NRE account allows for fund repatriation, unlike the NRO account.
## Trading Options for NRIs
NRIs can also invest through Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) listed on the NSE and BSE, which function like shares. These can be purchased using the same PIS-linked demat account, also on a delivery basis.
## Market Context
The Muhurat trading session comes amid global market volatility, with significant movements away from AI and tech stocks. Despite this, Indian markets have shown resilience, with both the NSE and BSE closing near their daily highs on November 6. The Sensex rose by 2.17%, and the Nifty increased by 2.01%, marking a strong performance despite global uncertainties.
