## Cult Leader Sentenced
Paul Mackenzie, a former taxi driver turned self-proclaimed pastor, has been sentenced to 200 years in prison in Kenya. He was found guilty of orchestrating the deaths of 190 children and one adult as part of a starvation cult.
## Shakahola Forest Massacre
The case, known as the "Shakahola Forest Massacre," came to light when hundreds of bodies were discovered at the cult's base near Malindi. Mackenzie and 28 others were convicted of murder and inciting followers to starve themselves to "meet Jesus."
## Court's Decision
The court handed Mackenzie 100 years for homicide and another 100 for starvation-related charges. His accomplices received lengthy sentences as well. Despite calls for the death penalty, the judge opted for a life sentence, citing the cult's belief in death as a path to heaven.
## Impact on Families
Families of victims, like Francis Wanje, who lost two grandchildren, expressed anger towards authorities for not acting sooner. Wanje's surviving grandchild was rescued after eight days without food.
## Ongoing Legal Battles
Mackenzie plans to appeal the verdict and faces additional charges, including manslaughter and terrorism. The trial involved 120 prosecution witnesses, revealing the cult's rejection of modern medicine and education.
## Calls for Regulation
The case has sparked demands for stricter oversight of religious groups in Kenya. Mackenzie had been arrested previously but released, highlighting gaps in regulatory enforcement.
