UAE traffic rules 2027: Five major changes every driver should know

## Vehicle Registration Limits

Starting January 1, 2027, UAE residents can register up to five vehicles. While owning two cars remains standard, additional vehicles will incur extra fees. Applications must be submitted electronically, and right-hand-drive vehicles are not permitted for road use.

## E-Scooter Permit Requirements

New regulations require electric scooter and e-bike riders to be at least 15 years old to obtain a permit. These permits last three years and cover various personal mobility devices. Safety standards include front and rear lights, audible warnings, and roadworthy components.

## Driving Time Restrictions

Drivers will be limited to nine hours of driving within a 24-hour period. This rule applies to all motorists, not just professionals. Drivers must stop if fatigue affects their ability to drive safely, even if they haven't reached the nine-hour limit.

## Licence Validity Changes

Driving licence validity will vary based on age and residency. Under 21s receive a one-year licence, while first-time applicants over 21 get a two-year licence. UAE and GCC nationals can renew for ten years, and expatriates for five years.

## Extended Vehicle Registration

Eligible light vehicles may qualify for a two-year registration period. To be eligible, the vehicle must be newly manufactured, no older than six years, and owned by an individual. Approval is at the discretion of licensing authorities.
