Ajman introduces new legislation governing lost items and abandoned property

## New Legislation Overview

Ajman has introduced a new law, Law No. (2) of 2026, to manage lost and abandoned property within the emirate. This legislation was enacted by His Highness Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, the Ruler of Ajman.

## Definitions and Responsibilities

The law defines lost property as movable items with value that are unintentionally misplaced, excluding stray animals. Abandoned property refers to items intentionally left by their owner. Ajman Police are tasked with handling these items, including receiving reports, storing, and announcing found items.

## Procedures and Rights

Finders must report lost items to the police within 48 hours. The police will issue a receipt detailing the item's description and condition. Owners can reclaim their property before disposal or claim its value within five years if sold. Multiple claims require a court ruling to determine ownership.

## Cooperation and Implementation

The law mandates cooperation from government and private entities with Ajman Police. The police may collaborate with other entities for storage or disposal of items. The Commander-in-Chief of Ajman Police will issue necessary regulations for the law's implementation.

## Recognition and Rewards

Finders may receive certificates or rewards for their honesty, potentially deducted from the item's value. The law overrides conflicting provisions in other legislation and is effective immediately upon publication in the Official Gazette.
