## Court Ruling on WhatsApp Insults
A Dubai court has mandated a man to pay Dh20,000 in compensation for insulting another person in a WhatsApp group chat. This decision was made after a criminal court had already found him guilty of using technology to defame and insult the claimant.
## Details of the Case
The incident took place between June and July 2025, where the defendant posted derogatory remarks about the claimant. The criminal court fined the defendant Dh5,000, confiscated his device, deleted the offensive content, and restricted his internet use for three months.
## Civil Claim and Court's Decision
Following the criminal conviction, the claimant sought Dh1 million in damages, citing harm to his reputation and financial losses. However, the court found insufficient evidence to support the full claim. The court awarded Dh20,000 for both material and moral damages, with a 5% annual interest from the judgment date until full payment.
## Legal Implications
The court emphasized that final criminal judgments are binding in civil cases, meaning the civil court could not reassess the criminal court's findings. The defendant is also responsible for court costs and additional legal fees.
