WEF survey: AI confidence strong, but data-centre backlash looms

## Economic Outlook and Living Costs

The World Economic Forum's recent survey indicates that while the global economy is stabilizing, future government spending may not cushion economic shocks as effectively as it has since 2020. Economists highlight rising living costs as a significant concern, with expectations of increased expenses in food, electricity, and transport. Real incomes are anticipated to stagnate or decline in most regions, except in South-East Asia and India, where income growth is expected.

Governments are likely to implement broad measures such as tax reductions on essential goods, consumption subsidies, and price caps to address these challenges. However, targeted support like cash transfers for low-income households is less anticipated.

## AI and Data Centre Expansion

Confidence in artificial intelligence remains robust, with 97% of economists predicting increased AI adoption. Many believe AI will enhance productivity and contribute to global growth. However, the expansion of data centers, crucial for AI development, is expected to face resistance from local communities. Concerns include potential increases in electricity and water prices and limited job creation.

## Shifting Economic Resilience

The survey reveals a shift in factors contributing to economic resilience. While fiscal support has been pivotal since 2020, its role is expected to diminish. Future resilience is likely to rely more on flexible supply chains, technological innovation, and energy market adaptation. The United States and China are seen as well-positioned to handle future disruptions.

The survey, conducted in August 2026, also ranks the United States as the most favorable business environment, followed by South-East Asia and Europe. India and China follow in fourth and fifth places, respectively.
