A Dubai-based breast surgeon, Dr. Taghreed Almahmeed, has raised concerns about the widespread belief that breast cancer primarily affects women with a family history of the disease. She emphasizes that around 85% of her patients diagnosed with breast cancer do not have any family history, challenging a common misconception that may deter women from undergoing necessary screenings.

## Importance of Early Screening

Dr. Almahmeed advises women to begin regular mammograms at age 40, regardless of family history. She highlights that screenings can detect cancer before any physical symptoms appear, with over half of her patients being diagnosed through mammograms before noticing any changes themselves.

## Recognizing Symptoms

While lumps are a well-known symptom, Dr. Almahmeed urges women to be vigilant about other signs such as skin dimpling, nipple inversion, persistent redness, swelling, or pain. She advises seeking medical evaluation if any new changes persist for more than two weeks.

## Advances in Treatment

Fear of treatment can delay diagnosis, but Dr. Almahmeed reassures that early-stage breast cancer often requires less invasive procedures. Many patients can opt for breast-conserving surgeries, like lumpectomies, followed by radiation instead of mastectomies. New technologies, including robotic and endoscopic surgeries, offer additional options, though they are not necessarily superior to traditional methods.
