## UK Joins Global Initiative

The United Kingdom has aligned with 128 countries in a global effort to limit the use of vetoes by permanent members of the United Nations Security Council in cases of mass atrocities, such as genocide. This initiative, originally proposed by Mexico and France in 2015, aims to encourage restraint among the five permanent members: France, UK, Russia, China, and the United States.

## Growing Support

The initiative is now just one country away from achieving support from two-thirds of UN member states. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot and Mexican counterpart Roberto Velasco highlighted the importance of this political declaration in ensuring the Security Council can effectively maintain international peace and security.

## Challenges and Hopes

Despite the growing support, the resolution would remain non-binding even if it reaches the two-thirds majority. However, proponents hope it will increase political pressure on permanent members to refrain from using their veto power in critical situations. France aims to secure the necessary support before the upcoming UN General Assembly.
