## Gulf Visitors on the Rise
Kerala is witnessing a significant shift in its tourism demographics, with Gulf tourists now surpassing Europeans as the primary international visitors. The state's Tourism Minister, PC Vishnunadh, highlighted the growing importance of markets like Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE in rebuilding Kerala's tourism sector.
## Visitor Statistics
In 2025, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries accounted for approximately 136,000 foreign tourist visits to Kerala, marking a 26% increase from the previous year. Oman emerged as a leading market with over 65,000 visitors, a nearly 70% rise from 2024. Saudi Arabia and the UAE also contributed significantly, with 31,593 and 26,255 visitors, respectively.
## Changing Tourism Dynamics
Traditionally reliant on European tourists, Kerala is now seeing a shift with Gulf countries generating more visitors than France and Germany combined in 2025. Oman ranked third among Kerala's foreign tourist markets, following the UK and the US, while Saudi Arabia and the UAE also climbed the rankings.
## Monsoon and Wellness Appeal
Kerala's monsoon season, once considered an off-peak period, is now marketed as a unique tourism product, attracting many Gulf visitors. The state promotes its cooler climate, lush greenery, and wellness experiences as an escape from the Gulf's intense summer heat. Ayurveda, in particular, is a major draw for Gulf tourists seeking authentic wellness experiences.
## Future Prospects
Despite the increase in Gulf visitors, Kerala's overall international tourism numbers have not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels. The state aims to further boost these numbers and enhance tourism revenue. Efforts are underway to improve air connectivity, which remains a key challenge for expanding international tourism.
## Strategic Initiatives
Kerala is actively engaging with Gulf markets through events like the Indo-Arab Connect and plans more promotional activities. The state is also exploring new tourism destinations to alleviate pressure on established sites and attract more visitors.
