## Iconic Cafe Mondegar Faces Licence Suspension

Mumbai's renowned Cafe Mondegar has had its food licence suspended following an inspection by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The inspection, led by FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, revealed multiple violations of food safety and hygiene standards.

## Inspection Findings

The FDA's visit to Cafe Mondegar on September 12 uncovered several issues, including improper food storage and preparation. Hot food was not kept above the required 60°C, and cold storage temperatures were not maintained below 5°C. Additionally, the inspection found improper thawing and inadequate cooling of cooked items.

Structural and sanitation problems were also identified, such as poor drainage near food preparation areas, which could lead to cross-contamination. Equipment cleaning and sanitization were found lacking, and parts of the flooring were damaged by dampness.

## Wider Crackdown in Mumbai

Cafe Mondegar is one of four eateries in Mumbai facing action. The FDA also suspended licences for Maharashtra Biryani Centre, Tribhuvan Dairy Farm, and Mahavir Cashew & Foods Pvt Ltd. These establishments were found to be in violation of the Food Safety and Standards Act's hygiene and sanitation requirements.

## Commissioner Mundhe's Campaign

The suspension is part of a broader crackdown on food safety violations across Maharashtra, led by Commissioner Mundhe. His aggressive inspection campaign has resulted in thousands of inspections and numerous licence suspensions, making him a well-known figure in the region.

During the recent drive, FDA teams inspected 38 food establishments in Greater Mumbai, collecting 47 samples of various food items. Across the state, the FDA seized over 4,000 kg of dairy products and sweets, along with 30 litres of milk, valued at approximately Rs 15.58 lakh.
