US oil stocks surge as Iran war disrupts global energy flows — API reports gains in crude, gasoline, distillate inventories

## Increase in US Oil Stocks

The American Petroleum Institute (API) has reported a significant increase in US oil inventories, with crude oil supplies rising by 7.1 million barrels for the week ending September 11, 2026. Additionally, gasoline and distillate stocks grew by 1.5 million and 1.6 million barrels, respectively.

## Impact of Middle East Conflict

The ongoing conflict involving Iran has severely disrupted oil shipping routes in the Middle East, notably affecting the Strait of Hormuz. This strategic waterway, which typically sees about 125 daily transits, witnessed only four on a recent Monday. The disruption has contributed to a surge in oil prices, with Brent crude reaching approximately $107.90 and WTI surpassing $104.95.

## Global Oil Market Challenges

Despite the increase in US oil inventories, global oil markets remain strained due to shipping bottlenecks and reduced exports from the Middle East. The situation is compounded by disruptions to Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline, which is pressuring alternative export routes.

## Awaiting Official Data

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) is expected to release its official Weekly Petroleum Status Report soon, which will provide more comprehensive data on crude production, refinery utilization, and petroleum-product demand.
