Sri Lanka tourism sees decline in European visit over Middle East transit disruptions

## Decline in European Arrivals

Sri Lanka has experienced a decrease in European tourist arrivals, largely due to disruptions in Middle Eastern transit routes. Nalin Jayasundera, President of the Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators, noted a two to three percent drop in European visitors over the first eight months of 2026. Many European travelers typically transit through Gulf hubs like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or Qatar on their way to Sri Lanka.

## Anticipated Recovery

Despite the current decline, there is optimism for recovery by next winter. Jayasundera mentioned a rise in inquiries from tour operators, suggesting a potential rebound. He emphasized that interest in Sri Lanka remains strong, particularly from the Asia-Pacific region, which is seeing growth.

## Tourism Goals and Strategies

Sri Lanka aims to attract 3 million tourists, expanding beyond traditional markets. Chamila Jayarathna, Deputy Managing Director of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, highlighted the country's core branding as 'compact, diverse, and authentic.' In 2025, Sri Lanka welcomed 2.36 million tourists, surpassing 2018 figures, but regional uncertainties have impacted current targets.

## Enhancing Connectivity

Efforts to boost tourism include expanding airline partnerships. Sri Lanka plans to renew its MOU with Emirates and establish a new agreement with Qatar Airways. The government has also extended its free visa policy to more countries to facilitate easier travel.

## New Attractions

The Pekoe Trail, a long-distance walking route in Sri Lanka's central highlands, is gaining popularity. Launched three years ago, it spans approximately 300 kilometers from Kandy, offering flexible stages for both casual walkers and dedicated trekkers.
