'Second life': Nepal tunnel survivor recalls ordeal

## Ten Days in Darkness

Sanjay Sah, a hydropower worker from Nepal, endured a ten-day ordeal trapped in a flooded tunnel following a catastrophic flood on August 26, 2026. The disaster, caused by a glacial collapse on the China-Nepal border, left Sah disoriented and unsure of how long he had been trapped.

## A Ray of Hope

The flood claimed at least 1,429 lives and left over 5,640 missing, mostly in Nepal. Sah's survival brought a glimmer of hope amidst the tragedy. Upon his rescue on September 4, he was reunited with his family, who celebrated his return with traditional rituals.

## Faith and Survival

Sah credits his survival to his strong Hindu faith, which helped him remain calm and hopeful during the isolation. Despite the lack of clean water, he managed to survive on muddy water and maintained contact with another trapped worker, Kabir Maharjan, which provided some comfort.

## Continuing Rescue Efforts

Sah's wife, Lakshmi Kumari Sah, never lost hope of his return. Sah, who spent time recovering in a Kathmandu hospital, expressed mixed emotions about his survival, urging authorities to continue rescue efforts in hopes of finding more survivors or recovering bodies for grieving families.
