## A Milestone Event
The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair marks its 35th anniversary in 2026, showcasing its evolution into a significant cultural and knowledge-sharing platform. Initially launched in 1981 as the "Islamic Book Fair," it has grown from a local event to an international hub for publishers and cultural figures.
## 2026 Edition Highlights
This year's fair, organized by the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre, runs from September 13 to 18 at ADNEC Abu Dhabi. The theme "Turn the Page and Read the World" underscores the UAE's commitment to cultural dialogue. The event features exhibitors from 95 countries and hosts approximately 1,500 events. The Balkan Culture is honored as the Guest of Honour, and the scholar Al-Khalil ibn Ahmad Al-Farahidi is celebrated as the central figure. Additionally, "Don Quixote" by Miguel de Cervantes is highlighted as the "Book of the World."
## Historical Growth
The fair has seen significant growth since its inception. By 1993, it became an annual event, expanding its reach to include international publishers. The 2000s saw a surge in participation, with over 800 publishers by 2004. The fair continued to enhance its global presence, with countries like France, the UK, and Sweden serving as Guests of Honour in the early 2010s.
## Recent Developments
In recent years, the fair has adapted to global challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and resumed its international journey. The 2023 edition featured Turkey as the Guest of Honour, while the 2024 edition welcomed 1,350 exhibitors from 90 countries.
## Future Outlook
The 35th edition's theme reflects the UAE's role in fostering intellectual openness and cultural exchange. It invites participants to transcend geographical boundaries through the exchange of ideas, reinforcing the fair's position as a leader in building a global knowledge society.
