At least 26 students killed as fire sweeps two schools in Congo

## Devastating Fire in Bukavu

A tragic fire in Bukavu, Eastern Congo, has resulted in the deaths of at least 26 students. The blaze, which began in a residential building, quickly spread to two nearby schools, Furaha secondary and Ujamaa primary.

## Casualties and Injuries

The South Kivu provincial government confirmed that 19 girls and seven boys were among the deceased. Many students were trapped inside the schools, leading to injuries from smoke inhalation and the rush to escape. The number of casualties is expected to rise.

## Emergency Response

Injured students were transported to Nyamulagira BDOM health centre for treatment. Medical staff faced challenges in managing the large influx of patients. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but the densely populated area, with many wooden structures, contributed to the rapid spread of flames.

## Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are investigating the incident to determine the fire's origin. The community is in mourning as they cope with the aftermath of this devastating event.
