Kylian Mbappe becomes Champions League's fifth all-time top goalscorer

## Mbappe's Milestone

Kylian Mbappe has reached a significant milestone in his career by becoming the fifth all-time top goalscorer in the UEFA Champions League. This achievement came during Real Madrid's 2-1 victory over Inter Milan in their opening match of the 2026/27 season.

## Match Highlights

The game, held at Santiago Bernabeu, saw Mbappe score the first goal, followed by a goal from teammate Federico Valverde. Inter Milan's defense and goalkeeper Josep Martinez made errors that contributed to Real Madrid's win.

## Scoring Record

Mbappe's goal against Inter Milan was his 71st in the Champions League, equaling the record of Real Madrid legend Raul Gonzalez. With this, he now ranks fifth in the competition's all-time scoring list.

## Future Prospects

While Mbappe needs one more goal to surpass Raul, he faces a significant challenge to catch up with the top four scorers. Karim Benzema has 91 goals, Robert Lewandowski has 109, Lionel Messi has 129, and Cristiano Ronaldo leads with 141 goals.

## Opportunities Ahead

The new Champions League format offers more matches, potentially giving Mbappe more opportunities to climb higher in the rankings. His current scoring rate suggests he would need around 81 more games to surpass Messi and 96 to overtake Ronaldo.

## Recent Honors

Before the match, Mbappe was awarded the Golden Boot for scoring 15 goals in 11 matches during the previous Champions League season, highlighting his consistent performance on the European stage.
