## Innovative Cancer Detection
In Bengaluru, a startup named Dognosis is pioneering a novel approach to cancer detection by training dogs to identify the disease through human breath. These dogs, equipped with sensor-laden helmets, are part of an experimental initiative that combines their acute sense of smell with artificial intelligence.
## How It Works
The process involves patients breathing into a cotton mask, which is then analyzed by the dogs. The dogs' reactions are monitored and converted into data using AI. This method aims to provide a non-invasive, cost-effective screening tool that could be widely implemented.
## Promising Results
A recent study by Dognosis, involving over 1,500 participants, showed an accuracy rate exceeding 90% for detecting seven major cancer types. The research, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, has garnered cautious optimism from local cancer specialists.
## Future Prospects
Dognosis plans to commercialize this technology next year, potentially becoming the third company globally to offer such services. The startup is collaborating with government medical institutions and is backed by venture capital, including Accel India.
## Training the Canine Team
The dogs, mostly beagles and some Malinois and Shepherd mixes, are trained using positive reinforcement. They work in short sessions to maintain a healthy balance, and their progress is tracked on the company's website.
## Addressing a Major Health Concern
With cancer being a significant health issue in India, affecting one in nine people, this innovative approach could enhance early detection and improve survival rates. The initiative also aims to advance "proactive and preventative medicine" while fostering better communication between humans and dogs.
