## Salary Increase Details
Singapore's government ministers, known for their high salaries, are set to receive their first pay raise in 15 years. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced that the annual salary for ministers at the lowest grade will increase from 1.1 million Singapore dollars to 1.8 million Singapore dollars. The prime minister's salary will also rise, reaching 3.6 million Singapore dollars.
## Implementation and Adjustments
The salary adjustments will not be immediate. Instead, ministers will receive a one-time increase of up to 9% starting October 15, based on their performance and responsibilities. By the end of the current term, most ministers at the lowest grade are expected to earn around 1.35 million Singapore dollars.
## Government's Justification
The government defends the high salaries as essential for attracting top talent from the private sector and maintaining a clean and effective administration. The salary framework is transparent, with no hidden perks, and is reviewed every five years.
## Historical Context
The current salary framework was established after a 2011 review, which led to a 36% salary cut following public concern. Although a review in 2017 suggested adjustments, they were not implemented. The latest review was postponed from 2023.
